Did the last owner have this problem and just replace the big end shells, which would last about a week. Possibly had a cam belt break and didn''t replace the shells. Plenty of other reasons for engine knock though.

He has been told that a new engine (recon) will cost about £2000 to supply & fit with filters etc. Is there a cheaper way around this as there is no way he can afford this.

Also only driving below a certain speed has nothing to do with it as you use the same rev range in all gears. Whilst at it, you could replace the rod bolts with some arp bolts for piece of mind. Pistons should be removed, the bores inspected and a potential hone/bore with new piston rings.

I usually use Glyco shells but on this engine all the crank grades are "A" and all the big end grades are "7" so ideally I need all yellow (thin) graded shells.
