The impact caused the bearing to move a little. Repeating this process many times, (circa 25 times) resulted in the bearing dropping off the spindle shaft. The threaded end of the shaft was not damaged. The bearing cover was then recovered for later re-assely on the lathe. The old spindle will be recycled at some stage to make a dividing head.

Mini Lathe Information. I purchased the old version of the HOMIER 7" x 12" mini lathe. It comes with 4mm change gear keyways and a nuer of other differences from most other mini lathes. I don''t think they make these anymore so unless you buy one of these used, you will get 3mm gear keyways with most of the parts the same between makers.

The main problem with the little 50mm and 80mm self-centering chucks is that the term "center" is only used rather casually. If you must use a dinky (or not-so-dinky but still cheap) chuck, then you are much better off with a manual 4-jaw.

If you want a suitable gunsmith lathe, you need at least 36" between centers and at least 1.5" spindle bore.

Jan 19, 2016· So make sure whatever lubricant you use won''t gum things up after a few years. I use spindle oil for the spindle and shaft bearings & other misc oilers, heavy/medium gear oil in the headstock and way oil for the ways. I imagine a decent synthetic motor oil would work fine too- many South Bends seem to prefer 0W or 10W Mobil 1 in the spindle.
